I first came across the Bernese in mid 70’s at crufts, it was love at first sight. However due to various commitments it wasn’t until 1992 we were able to get our first Bernese puppy ( Bruno), the breeder had a cart and told us more about the working side of the breed. Sue and I went along to a few carting events, I had also joined a obedience training club of which I became a trainer (and did it my way) and served as a committee member for 10 years. In December 1992 I managed to buy two carts to renovate, I was now well and truly hooked. In 1993, off we went to the GB garden party at Towcester race course. We harnessed Bruno up for the first time, his tail wagging barking non-stop then off round the course flat out. It was then I thought there must a better way of doing this. Later that year the Bernese Carting Group started and in 1994 we were doing our display at Crufts.

Since starting with the Bernese in ‘92 we have owned 8 berns and 3 Newfoundlands. All have been draft dogs and loved it ( A working Bernese is a happy Bernese ) so try it and have FUN with your dogs
